Splash 'n' Spin
Project Brief
One of the main sources of physical and mental exhaustion for new parents is the need to maintain a clean and safe environment for their child. My team aimed to design a solution that eases the process of cleaning and sanitisation, reducing time and energy required to clean. The key situation we focused on is on-the-go cleaning, where sterilising items is critical, while simultaneously challenging. To hypothesise introduction to the market, we aligned with an existing brand, introducing Splash 'n' Spin to their line.
Role
Within this Industrial Design Engineering Project, I was in an active COO role, which involved management and administration of all team activities, iterative design, as well as responsibility over all legislative elements of the product and packaging design and risk assessments.
Iterative Design & Engineering
Branding - To get the product into the market, we integrated into a brand that new parents know and trust: Munchkin. This, in turn, served as a guide for visual assets in product, packaging and marketing materials.
Digital Testing, Detail Design & Calculations - Analysis on the cage inside to simulate it spinning in the water, as well as drop tests and stress analysis on snapfits, resulting in ability to make a watertight, durable product. Calculations performed to evaluate demand on motor and battery, as well as cycle number on full charge.
Assembly - Assuming 10k part production, injection mould costs were estimated with an online quote generator, and production, manufacturing and labour cost estimation with Solidworks tool. Total equated to £18, nearly half the selling cost of the simple Munchking UV steriliser.
Compliance - assessment for risk and misuse hazards is clearly relayed in a user guide. Explicit labelling on the product packaging and user guide, including the UKCA mark, and for North America, the ETL and FCC. The harmonised WEEE directive is also included.
Final Concept
In just a few steps, a parent gets a completely clean item back. Following rigorous engineering methods, my team has developed Splash 'n' Spin to last, and serve loyally. We can find market opportunities for expansion of Splash 'n' Spin into a larger market, through other parent types and generally. The product is versatile, capable of sterilising many items such as retainers and keys.
Splash ‘n’ Spin addresses not only the pains of new parents, but also a larger audience, aiding the in feeling safer, prepared and freer.
